Little Women Review
- A MOVIE REVIEW -
I gave up on reading classics when I fell in love with contemporary literature and modern fantasy but I always had a love for the dreamy and warm feel the classic novels always gave. But as I drifted further away into modern literature I lost my chance to read a gem like Little Women.
Recently when I saw the movie and loved every moment of it, I was feeling slightly guilty for not having persevered in finishing the book before.
This story was so heartwarming, it left me feeling cozy and comfortable in my own skin - a rare occurrence.
Meg, Jo,Amy and Beth were wonderful characters, so beautifully portrayed by Louise May Alcott through her writing and by Greta Gerwig through her direction. These girls through their journey teach us the simple truths about life and love. But more than anything they speak about the world and even though we are a century or more ahead of this story their words still matter. We still live in a patriarchal society but a much better one maybe? I wouldn't be so sure.
The biggest gem that I would take from this story is that despite the times they were in, these girls were full of life. They were very real, living their lives to the fullest and dreaming sky high like almost all of us do. But their reality didn't match their dreams just as it is sometimes in life.
Meg dreamed of being an actress and marrying rich to support her family but what she found was much much better. The lack of riches does leave her yearning but the love she found was far far better. Amy stayed sane and practical. She tried to come out at the top by marrying rich but ended up learning that riches don't give you happiness always. And Jo.. dear old Jo, who braced through every hardship that came her way, learned to trust her feelings and choices. She had regrets, she lost her footing and fell into the depths of loneliness and rejection, but her drive was stronger than ever and she came out strong. She ended up setting an example to women all over the world for yet another century to come. And last but not the least, good old Beth... She was wonderful in herself, full of love, peace and music. She portrayed the gentle side of women but even she stood her ground and established her choices. Everyone had the right to choose and choices were to be respected and all four of them helped us realize that.
These little women, each depicted a different kind of women cause yes, we are all different. There isn't a single trait that will tie us down as one bundle. We are hues and shades with shadows and greys in between and each new shade of colour is just as pretty as the one before. Varied, unique and special.
This artwork is something I did right after watching the movies. It is one of those few works I am extremely proud of.

This is a wonderful story and I loved Greta Gerwig's film version the best. Great review too! I can totally feel you! ❤
